Chairman’s Message

By Sharon Lukich, CPA

TXCPA Dallas has some great September events for you.
If you’re in need of credit to fulfill your Ethics requirement this month, on September 20, we hope you’ll join us for our in-person, State-approved, four-hour Ethics course, taught by Allison McLeod. The Brown Bag Lunch Serieson September 22, will feature Tom Walker, CFO of the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. Just in time for the start of football season, Tom will entertain us all with his front-row insight into the workings of America’s Team.
If networking sounds good to you, take a breather with us on September 23, at Blue Mesa Grill for food, beverages and a chance to visit with your friends, old and new. Thirsty Thursday continues to be one of our most popular events, and we invite you to come out and enjoy it with us!
With September turning our thoughts to the start of a new school year, now is a great time to make a donation to TXCPA Dallas Scholarship Fund. Part of our organization’s vision is to promote accounting as a career, and one of our main avenues for accomplishing that has been through this scholarship program. Over the last 21 years, we have awarded over $200,000 to 140 deserving seniors and graduate accounting students in the North Texas area. We have accomplished this through the generous contributions of members like you. If you would like to have a hand in shaping the future of the accounting profession, as well as this association, please give to the TXCPA Dallas Scholarship fund.
Enjoy your September!
Sharon Lukich, CPA
Board Chairman, 2021-22

Live Ethics Course

A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior:

A CPE Ethics Course for Texas CPAs

Monday, September 20, 2021

You are invited to join us for our monthly, State-approved, four-hour Ethics course, A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior: A CPE Ethics Course for Texas CPAs.
Speaker and author, Allison M. McLeod, LL.M., CPA, will educate and inform CPAs not just on what is the right thing to do according to the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct but how to put your values into action!  As part of this course, we will also look at various schools of ethical thought and walk through real world examples of individuals and companies faced with moral dilemmas.
Description: A CPA is challenged in today’s work world to not only serve his/her client or employer but also to protect the public interest by ensuring that there is transparency in financial reporting or there is fair administration of the tax laws. In balancing the two interests, a CPA may find him or herself in an ethical dilemma. This course covers not only basic ethical frameworks, but also specific rules governing CPA practice and responsibilities. It concludes with a section on how a CPA can put his or her ethics into action.
Learning Objectives:
  1. To educate licensees in ethics of professional accounting as Texas CPAs.
  2. To convey the intent of the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct in the performance of professional accounting services/work, not to adhere to the mere technical compliance of such rules.
  3. To assist the Texas CPA in applying ethical judgment in interpreting the rules and determining public interest. Public interest should be placed ahead of self-interest, even if it means a loss of job or client.
  4. To review and discuss the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and their implications for persons in a variety of practices, including:
    • CPAs in client practice of public accountancy who perform attest and non-attest services.
    • CPAs employed in industry who provide internal accounting and auditing services.
    • CPAs employed in education or in government accounting or auditing.
This is a live, in-person event.

PAC Notes

Didn’t get fingerprinted yet?

The PAC has you covered.

Before TXCPA stepped in, every CPA in Texas – along with most other licensed professionals – had to have submitted fingerprints to the State Board of Accountancy by September 1 of this year. Let TXCPA CPA-PAC Chair Terri Hornberger explain here how the respect for our PAC helped change the deadline. Donate today to keep your profession strong.

Share Your Input on Draft Content for the New CPA Exam

Under the new CPA Evolution licensure model, the CPA Exam will feature a Core and Discipline structure. Over the last several months, AICPA’s Examinations Team engaged CPA subject matter experts in discussions about potential CPA Exam content that reflects the changing role of newly licensed CPAs. Now it’s time to hear from you! AICPA invites you to review the draft Core and Discipline section content and share your feedback by September 7 via this survey. The survey will take about 20-25 minutes to complete and will provide AICPA with vital feedback to develop the new CPA Exam.

Extra Business Because of PPP Loans? Thank a PAC Donor.

Thanks to TXCPA’s strength and credibility with the legislature, we were able to mobilize quickly to get PPP loan forgiveness passed during the legislative session. Your clients may have received PPP loans during the pandemic. TXCPA advocacy and your PAC donations helped ensure that these forgiven loans were not subject to state taxes. A lot of groups try to get bills passed, but they don’t have the success we do because they don’t have a PAC as strong and respected as TXCPA’s. Making a PAC donation is the fastest, simplest way to help keep Texas CPAs strong. The PAC fundraising year runs through March of 2022. Make your contribution today to keep your profession strong.
