Chairman’s Message
By Bill Sims, CPA
September marks the end of summer, the start of football season and the beginning of cooler temperatures (we hope!). As we eagerly await that first nip in the air, TXCPA Dallas is announcing some pretty cool events of its own.
The Young Professionals Group is holding a CPE event on September 18. Scott Sorbet of Hilltop Holdings will present, “Break the 120 CPE Credit-Hour Mindset Like Your Job Depends on It.” On September 20, we offer our monthly Ethics course, and on September 26, you can attend an afternoon education session focused on Human Resources issues entitled, “Top 10 Employment Mistakes.” You can register for all these events and more via the events calendar on our website.
The 2019-20 Member Appreciation CPE Series has been scheduled. The dates are: October 22, November 12, December 19 and January 8. More information and registration for the October event will come soon, so watch your inbox. And we have set the date for Convergence 2020. Our annual, all-day CPE conference will be held on Monday, May 4, 2020, at the Omni Frisco Hotel at The Star. Registration will open in December with Early Bird pricing available, so you’ll want to sign up early and plan to join your friends and colleagues at the premier event of our CPE year!
If social events and community outreach are more in your line of interest, be sure to check out a couple of fun activities this month. Our September Thirsty Thursdaysocial hour takes place on September 19 at Blue Mesa Grill in Addison. TXCPA Dallas will participate again this year in St. Jude’s Walk to End Childhood Cancer on Saturday, September 21. This worthwhile cause is fast becoming a perennial favorite of the association, and we hope you’ll join us at the AT&T Performing Arts Center on the morning of the 21st and be a part of something very special.
Also this month, we are accepting nominations for 2020-21 TXCPA Dallas leadership. If you know of someone whom you believe would be a great addition to our leadership team, submit your nominee(s) to Laura McFadden by October 7. Let your voice be heard in the future direction of your professional association.
Until next month, have a prosperous and productive September.

Break the 120 CPE Credit-Hour Mindset
Like Your Job Depends on It
Course Description
When you pass the CPA exam you celebrate crossing a finish line on a career goal, but then also find yourself at the starting line of a completely new race – the race for relevance. Instead learning skills of the future is the new lifeline for positioning CPAs into relevance for the rest of the 21st century. Big data, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cryptocurrency are here to stay, but what should CPAs do to make sure they are too?
Learning Objective
Participants will:
· Understand the importance of recognizing the shifting skillset demands of CPAs.

DCPAS Scholarship Winner Spotlight
Each month, we will spotlight one of this year’s Dallas CPA Society Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) graduate accounting student, Olamiposi Ajayi, and welcoming him to the Dallas CPA Society.
Olamiposi Ajayi’s journey to accounting has been a series of steps and milestones. Perhaps his biggest step was coming to Dallas directly from Nigeria four years ago with the dream of becoming an accountant gleaned from the accounting classes he had enjoyed in high school and the accounting role models he had known. Once in Dallas, his next step was enrollment in Richland College. At Richland, he concentrated on building his academic record and researched the career opportunities available to accountants. The next step was to transfer to UTD where, through the prestigious Professional Program in Accounting (PPA), Olamiposi acquired public accounting experience through internships at different companies. This experience helped him decide on an audit path to his goal of becoming a public accountant. Finally, this past spring he reached his latest milestone, achievement of his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
Olamiposi received Richland College’s Spring 2017 Honors Scholarship. He has also received the PPA, Comet Transfer, Phi Theta Kappa Transfer and Diversity scholarships from UTD. He is a member of the National Association of Black Accountants, Phi Theta Kappa fraternity, Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, the Diversity Scholars Program and the National Association of Collegiate Scholars. He also serves in the Media Department and as a youth leader at Upendo Baptist Church.
Olamiposi’s next milestones on the way to his ultimate goal of the receipt of his CPA license will be graduation with his Masters in Accounting in May of 2020, then sitting for the CPA exam.
The Dallas CPA Society welcomes and congratulates Olamiposi Ajayi.
