Chairman's Message

by Time Pike, CPA

The Dallas CPA Society has some outstanding events for you!

On the 20th, join us for our September Thirsty Thursday networking event at Bar Louie’s in The Shops at Park Lane. This meet-up is always a great opportunity to make new friends and catch up with old ones. Also this month, the DCPAS will participate again this year in the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer on September 22nd. Last year’s team raised $1,300 for this excellent cause, and we hope to smash that mark this year. Read about how you can register to walk with us elsewhere in this edition. Time for your ethics? We will have Dr. Richard Mark teaching our monthly Ethics class on September 10th. Dr. Mark leads a lively discussion on personal and professional ethical considerations for CPAs.

Further into our 2018-19 schedule;
Member Appreciation CPE Series seminars – October 23rd, November 12th, December 18th and January 8th
Controller/CFO CPE Series – Starting soon
Annual Holiday Party – December 13th at Park City Club

Of course, I can’t forget our biggest event of all. Convergence 2019 will be held Monday, April 29, 2019, and we’re headed back again this year to the Omni Frisco Hotel at The Star! Last year will be a tough act to follow, but our Convergence 2019 Planning Committee has already begun working toward that goal, creating another memorable experience for you. Mark your calendar!

Finally, I’m happy to announce an exciting initiative between our organization and the Dallas Foundation. Our two associations are sponsoring the Young Philanthropist Award to be given annually to a DCPAS member under the age of 40 who has made a significant contribution to the Dallas nonprofit community. The inaugural award will be presented at our Annual Meeting in January. To find out more about this project, read below.

We hope to see you at all of these and other great events offered this year by the Dallas CPA Society.

Your PAC donation goes a long way without ever leaving home.

Mark your calendar for the week of September 17th, because every penny donated to the PAC that week will stay right here in the Dallas Chapter. Usually 25¢ of every PAC dollar raised goes into the bucket for statewide races, but the week of the 17th, 100% of the donations we make to the PAC will go toward legislative races here at home. Giving is EASY: just text CPAPAC to 51555 to make your contribution, or donate online.

Each month, we will spotlight one of this year’s Dallas CPA Society Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) graduate accounting student, Nick Breining, and welcoming him to the Dallas CPA Society.

Nick Breining’s internship at Deloitte & Touche was extremely important in his quest to become a Certified Public Accountant. Not only did it provide him with outstanding accounting experience, it was there that he developed a deep understanding of, and fascination with, his chosen field. He also discovered perhaps the most important lesson of his journey so far, that while accounting may be about the numbers, the profession is much more than that and that the privilege of becoming a CPA is more than just a sign of accounting competence. It is also sign of ethical and personal integrity within the public and business community.

Nick graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Accounting in May of this year and expects to receive his Masters in 2019. At UTD he was awarded the AES Continuing Student and PPA 10 Scholarships in recognition of his academic excellence. He served as the President and Treasurer of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and designed a fundraiser for The Ability Experience, an organization that promotes persons with disabilities.

In addition to his time at Deloitte, Nick also interned at Atmos Energy. He will join Deloitte as an audit assistant in the firm’s Dallas practice upon completion of his Masters degree next year.

The Dallas CPA Society welcomes and congratulates Nick Breining.

Chapter Tip Sheet

September 2018

Bonus Week for The CPA-PAC
For the week of September 16-22, 100 percent of your CPA-PAC contribution will stay in your chapter’s PAC fund (instead of the usual 75/25 split with the statewide fund). And we’ve made it really easy for you to give. Think about how many texts you send. Now ask yourself how many of them actually help protect your livelihood? The Board of Accountancy is undergoing sunset review and to put it simply: if the sunset bill doesn’t pass, CPAs will no longer be licensed in Texas. We can’t let that happen. We need to protect ourselves and give to the CPA-PAC. The good news is that it couldn’t be easier: just text CPAPAC to 51555 to make your contribution. Or donate online.

Accounting Career Education (ACE)
Plans are underway for another successful year of accounting career education. Individual members are encouraged to speak to classes or participate in career fairs. TSCPA offers free classroom materials, talking points and giveaways for students.

Please be sure to let your chapter know about your activities so that efforts are coordinated for maximum effectiveness.

For information about TSCPA’s ACE program, contact Catherine Raffetto (phone 800-428-0272 x 216 / 972-687-8516).
