Chairman’s Message

By Bill Sims, CPA

It’s October and a great time to be a member of TXCPA Dallas! The month is packed with activities that will educate and entertaining, and we hope you’ll join us for all of them.

At TXCPA Dallas, we are very proud of our well-earned reputation for offering the area’s best in live, classroom education. We know that there is a wide range of choices available in CPE sources these days, and we strive to excel in our niche for those who prefer the dynamic exchange of ideas that you can only find through in-person CPE events. If this applies to you, we have some super opportunities for you to pick up important knowledge, as well as a few CPE credit hours, this month. On October 18, Dr. Richard Mark will be leading our monthly four-hour Ethics course. Dr. Mark has an extensive background in law and accounting and is currently a tenured professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. His presentations are lively and engaging, and he has become one of our most popular instructors. Don’t miss the opportunity to fulfill your Ethics requirement in one of the most compelling courses around. On October 22, the Member Appreciation CPE Series opens its 2019-20 season with a four-hour presentation by Tim Pike, Partner at Howard LLP and TXCPA Dallas’ Immediate Past Chair, and Adam Tarnow, Director at Watermark Community Church. This seminar, entitled Supercharge Your Employee Engagement, will address ways you can amp up the passion and commitment with which your staff approaches their job and the workplace in general. Both Tim and Adam are highly-respected TXCPA Dallas speakers, and you won’t want to miss the chance to add to your toolkit of strategies to enhance one of the most important factors in professional success. The Young Professionals Group will hold their monthly committee meeting and CPE event on October 24, at Peticolas Brewing Company. One hour of CPE will be offered featuring Tanya Winchel of Hilltop Holdings speaking on Professional Presence and Stand-out Behaviors for CPAs, followed by a networking opportunity. Save the date and round out the month with a half-day course on FASB and related topics at TXCPA Dallas Training Facility on October 30. Registration for this event will open soon, so stay tuned.

If you’re interested in networking and entertainment, we also have you covered. This month’s Thirsty Thursday, sponsored by Atwood & McCall, will happen on Thursday, October 17, at Blue Mesa Grill on Montfort Drive. If you’ve never attended – or if you’re a monthly regular – make plans to take a breather and join your fellow Chapter members for good refreshments and great conversation. We hope to see you there!

Don’t forget that you only have until October 7, to submit your nominations for 2020-21 TXCPA Dallas leadership positions. There’s an article elsewhere in this newsletter that gives you more information, but I do want to encourage you to participate in this important aspect of your professional association membership. Help create the future of your organization.

There are so many great things happening at TXCPA Dallas, not only in October, but through the end of the year. Read your monthly newsletters and check ourwebsite often to keep up with all the many terrific ways to take advantage of your TXCPA Dallas membership.

Until November…

TXCPA Dallas

Scholarship Winner Spotlight

Each month, we will spotlight one of this year’s TXCPA Dallas Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) graduate accounting student, Hayden Becker, and welcoming him to the association.

Hayden Becker’s decision to become an accountant may have been made as much by his stomach as his brain. It began with a high school project intended to help him find the profession best suited to him. The task was to interview people in multiple industries and write a report on which ones he favored. Hayden’s choices came down to: doctor, engineer and accountant. He realized that his math skills would never allow him to be an engineer, and he would never be able to handle the “grossness” of the medical profession. He ultimately settled on accounting because of the stability, importance and vast array of career options available in the field. As he puts it, “I have always felt a calling to do something that made an impact and…given I do not possess the stomach to be a doctor, I should serve” by fulfilling the needs of investors and companies as the most excellent auditor he can possibly be.

Hayden began his college career at the University of Texas at Tyler where he received the Patriot Scholarship, then transferred to UTD where he was awarded the Comet Transfer and Intuit Scholarships. He achieved Superior Distinction in the National Speech and Debate Association and was a Business Communications Competition Finalist. Hayden has served as the President, Vice-President of Operations and Alumni Liaison for Alpha Kappa Psi, a co-ed professional business fraternity. He was accepted into UTD’s elite Professional Program in Accounting and received his Bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in May of this year.

Hayden has interned at Beckley CPA and Cornwell Jackson. He served as an audit intern for KPMG earlier this year, where half of his time was spent in their Moscow office working on the consolidated audit of a large beverage company. That experience inspired him to become the best auditor he can be in preparation for more such exciting prospects in the future. His work at KMPG earned him an offer of full-time employment that he will begin in the fall of 2020, following receipt of his Accounting Master’s degree from UTD and successful passage of the CPA exam.

The Dallas CPA Society welcomes and congratulates Hayden Becker.
