Chairman’s Message

By Tim Pike, CPA

Dallas CPA

Every month the Dallas CPA Society promotes, protects, and advances our profession! We do this through CPE, networking, community involvement, and educating those outside our profession! Additionally, our new-look website is live! Its simplified, mobile-friendly, and most importantly, speaks to who we are!

CPE:

  • October 8thEthics taught by Dr. Richard Mark who offers an unusual perspective on ethical considerations.
  • October 17thController/CFO CPE Series: Legal Environment. Led by attorneys from Gray Reed & McGraw LLP, this course will investigate various workplace legal issues.
  • October 23rdMember Appreciation CPE Series. This event will feature sessions led by Jimmy Martens of Martens Todd Leonard and Ahlrich; James Creedon with Creedon PLLC; Robert Tobey with Johnson Tobey Baruch; and Larry Jones of Freeman Law PLLC.

We hope you’ll take advantage of all of these great offerings, but you need to register quickly, as space is limited.

Networking: October 19th at Coal Vines on Belt Line Road, join us for our October ThirstyThursday. These events offer the best way to make and build lasting relationships, and they continue to grow in popularity and attendance each month. I hope you’ll make the time to attend this month!

Advancing: We have some absolutely amazing leaders that advocate for our 6,200 members! Don’t forget that you only have through October 5th to submit your nominations for 2019-20 DCPAS leadership positions. There’s an article elsewhere in this newsletter that gives you more information. I encourage you to participate in this important aspect of your membership. Help create the future of your organization!

Protecting: Until I became active in the Dallas CPA Society, I had no idea about the efforts that CPA leaders throughout the state put forth to both protect our license and to educate legislators on the effects of various bills. With the upcoming session in Austin in January, we should all be aware there are significant matters that will affect us professionally as well as personally. The TSBPA – and, consequently, our CPA licenses – are up for sunset reviewthis year. There have already been several recommendations that the state sunset review committee has put forth that will affect our licensing in the future. Our Legislative Affairs Committee has already been making significant efforts on our behalf. Financial contributions assist them to protect our livelihoods. Join us in this crucial endeavor and make a donation by texting “CPAPAC” to 51555, or clicking here.

There are so many great things happening at the DCPAS, not only in October, but through the end of the year. Read your monthly newsletters and check our website often to keep up with all of the many terrific ways to take advantage of your Dallas CPA Society membership.

Until November…

Tim Pike, CPA

2018-19 Board Chair

Scholarship Winner Spotlight

Each month, we will spotlight one of this year’s Dallas CPA Society Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know University of North Texas (UNT) graduate accounting student, Leslie Holt, and welcoming her to the Dallas CPA Society.

“Serving the public has always been a passion of mine”, writes Leslie Holt, “and I want to continue doing so as a CPA.” Leslie has served the public in the field of education by working for 11 years as a math and substitute teacher. It is her love of mathematics, of numbers and challenging puzzles, along with her desire to assist others that has led her to becoming a CPA.

Leslie received her BA in Mathematics from Texas Tech University, and she began her graduate work at UNT in the summer of 2016. She has been on the UNT Dean’s List and received the Jennifer A. Kemp Scholarship for the 2017-18 year. She is currently a UNT student affiliate of the AICPA, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and the Golden Key International Honour Society. She lists her extracurricular activities as “raising my two teenage boys.”

In addition to her work as an educator, Leslie served as a bookkeeper for Reynolds Signature Homes and interned for CliftonLarsonAllen in the spring of 2018. She has since signed a letter of intent with the firm and will begin working there in September of 2019, following the receipt of her Masters degree from UNT.

The Dallas CPA Society welcomes and congratulates Leslie Holt.
