Chairman’s Message
By Tim Pike, CPA
This month it’s all about giving.
The month of November is traditionally a time set aside for gratitude and giving back. November is also TSCPA’s Month of Giving, and we have some excellent opportunities for you to participate in this charitable initiative while contributing substantively to the community that supports us.
On November 3rd, we’ll be helping in the food pantry of the North Texas Shared Ministries. On November 17th, we’ll be making sandwiches for the homeless at TangoTab’s Feed the City in Frisco, and on November 27th, there’s a chance to help out in the North Texas Food Bank’s Distribution Center in Plano. You can register for any or all of these events by clicking here. On November 15th, our young professionals will once again be co-sponsoring the annual social event Fall Fest, along with several other young professional associations from the Dallas area. This event is always a huge hit and benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Dallas. You can find out more about Fall Fest here. There are many chances this month to reach out and give generously to those in need!
Other fun DCPAS happenings through the end of the year include the November Thirsty Thursday gathering, November 15th, at Blue Mesa Grill on Montfort Drive. Another event I know you’ll want to attend, the Annual Holiday Party, will take place again this year at Park City Club on December 13th.
If you’re in need of CPE, we have the second of our 2018-19 Member Appreciation CPE Series events coming up on November 12th, and the third is scheduled for December 18th. Ethics courses are available on November 7th and December 4th, and a Controller CPE Series course, Advanced Excel, will round out the calendar year on December 7th. Be on the lookout for the opening of Convergence 2019 registration, coming soon. Watch your email inbox and our website, as you’ll want to take advantage of Early Bird pricing and secure your spot for this outstanding event.
In this season of gratitude, I’d like to express my appreciation to you for your support of our organization. You perform a great service to your fellow members and together we will drive the profession forward!

Nonprofit RETREET is Looking for a Treasurer
RETREET redefines disaster relief by engaging communities to replant lost trees. We envision a near future in which the need to restore the urban environment is considered part of the standardized response to disaster and is provided for alongside other relief initiatives. RETREET offers a unique hands-on experience for those who wish to volunteer in the wake of disaster. We are the only organization in the world focused on this neglected part of the recovery process.
We foster community, encourage a strong connection to nature, as well as tree planting and care education. Most importantly, we harness the innate spirit of volunteerism that crops up when disaster strikes in order to bolster diminished communities and augment the sense of interpersonal connectivity. Through direct engagement with residents and local partners, RETREET transforms moonscapes back into landscapes, making decimated terrain feel like home again.
RETREET is based in Dallas and we’ve done work in Rowlett as well as in other cities throughout the country. We are looking for a Treasurer to join our board, preferably someone from the Dallas CPA Society. This individual should have experience with nonprofit accounting and a passion for trees! Thank you for reviewing our organization at http://www.retreet.org/. We look forward to hearing from you! Please contact grady@retreet.org with any questions and interest.

Scholarship Winner Spotlight
Each month, we will spotlight one of this year’s Dallas CPA Society Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know University of North Texas (UNT) senior accounting student, Megan Murphy, and welcoming her to the Dallas CPA Society.
Megan Murphy writes of her motivation to receive her CPA certification: “It will be a sign to employers and clients that I am committed to high standards and professional ethics.” Megan’s level of commitment to her goal of becoming a CPA cannot be overstated. She currently works two jobs, maintains a 4.0 GPA and is on track to finish both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in four years.
Megan received the Aaron Paul Wilford Memorial Scholarship and the UNT Excellence Scholarship. She is the Vice-President of the UNT chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, is a member of the UNT Honor’s College and is on the President’s List at the university.
