Chairman’s Message

By Jason Freeman, CPA

It’s all about Convergence 2021 Online! Three weeks from now, May 28, the curtain goes up on our 17th annual education conference. I’m excited to hear what you think about the impressive platform we’ve chosen for this virtual experience. Also exciting is the slate of outstanding speakers and timely topics we’ve assembled that includes a lunchtime keynote conversation with Jodey Arrington, the U.S. Representative from the 19th Congressional District of Texas. Willie Hornberger, former TXCPA Dallas Chairman, will be interviewing Rep. Arrington, so it’s sure to be a fascinating and wide-ranging discussion filled with valuable information for all of us. If you haven’t already registered, what are you waiting for? Do it. Now. Here.
While you’re enjoying the Convergence experience, please visit the Sponsor Page to talk with those who make our signature event possible. These great organizations have supplied much of the tangible and intangible support required to put on an event of this quality, and we are extremely grateful to each one of them for doing that. I encourage all of you to review the list of sponsors in this edition, visit them at Convergence 2021 Online, and be sure to consider them when you’re in the market for the services they provide.
Are you ready to come out and play with your friends? For our May 20th Thirsty Thursday networking event, we’re venturing out live! This event is particularly special, not only because it’s our first truly live event in over a year, but also because this is the social hour honoring our Convergence sponsors. Registration will open soon, so mark your calendars for the 20th, watch your email and come celebrate with us these great reasons to party!
CPE events coming up include another in our Behind-the-Scenes events on May 18th. This time we’ll visit the Dallas Entrepreneur Center at Redbird. This excellent organization drives innovation and economic impact by helping entrepreneurs start, build and grow their businesses. On the 21st, Allison McLeod delivers our monthly Ethics course, so if you need to fill your ethics requirement this month, we hope you’ll join us.
If you are – or you know of – a promising college junior, senior or graduate accounting student, June 4th is the deadline for this year’s TXCPA Dallas Scholarship entries. Over the last 18 years, 124 outstanding students have been selected by TXCPA Dallas Scholarship Committee to receive over $195,000 in scholarships. This is one of the Chapter’s most prestigious programs, and we are very proud of the part it plays in developing the next generation of accounting professionals and leaders. This program has been made possible by the generous donations of hundreds of our members over the years. If you would like to contribute, click here.
The end of this month will mark the end of my term as TXCPA Dallas Board Chairman, which has been an amazing and rewarding experience. My sincere gratitude goes to the 11 individuals who served on the Board of Directors with me this year. Your skill, wisdom and dedication inspire me and make me proud to be a member of this organization. Thank you to the committee chairs and members, and all of you who worked so hard this year to further the mission of TXCPA Dallas. It is your ideas and effort that fuel the high performance of this institution. To the Chapter staff – Meg, Laura and Melanie – you make the wheels turn and the greatness happen! And to you as well, TXCPA Dallas members. I have thoroughly enjoyed having your company, hearing your thoughts and receiving your help and encouragement on this journey. Sharon Lukich, whom, if you’ve ever attended almost any Chapter event, you probably have met, will take the Chairman’s gavel for 2021-22, and I am confident that we can all expect a great year under her leadership.
Again, thanks to all of you, and I wish you the very best!
Jason Freeman, JD, CPA
2020-21 Board Chairman

Online Ethics Course

A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior:

A CPE Ethics Course for Texas CPAs

May 21, 2021

You are invited to join us for our monthly, State-approved, four-hour Ethics course, A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior: A CPE Ethics Course for Texas CPAs.
Speaker and author, Allison M. McLeod, LL.M., CPA, will educate and inform CPAs not just on what is the right thing to do according to the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct but how to put your values into action!  As part of this course, we will also look at various schools of ethical thought and walk through real world examples of individuals and companies faced with moral dilemmas.
Description: A CPA is challenged in today’s work world to not only serve his/her client or employer but also to protect the public interest by ensuring that there is transparency in financial reporting or there is fair administration of the tax laws. In balancing the two interests, a CPA may find him or herself in an ethical dilemma. This course covers not only basic ethical frameworks, but also specific rules governing CPA practice and responsibilities. It concludes with a section on how a CPA can put his or her ethics into action.
Learning Objectives:
  1. To educate licensees in ethics of professional accounting as Texas CPAs.
  2. To convey the intent of the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct in the performance of professional accounting services/work, not to adhere to the mere technical compliance of such rules.
  3. To assist the Texas CPA in applying ethical judgment in interpreting the rules and determining public interest. Public interest should be placed ahead of self-interest, even if it means a loss of job or client.
  4. To review and discuss the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and their implications for persons in a variety of practices, including:
  • CPAs in client practice of public accountancy who perform attest and non-attest services.
  • CPAs employed in industry who provide internal accounting and auditing services.
  • CPAs employed in education or in government accounting or auditing.
