Chairman’s Message

By Jason Freeman, CPA

Welcome, Spring! If you’re like me, after the unrelenting stress and dis-ease of the last year, you are more than ready for this life-affirming season of renewal and hope. At TXCPA Dallas, we’re “springing” into the season with many great events.

We have some good opportunities this month for CPE. On March 25, Eric Marchand and Joel Crouch of Meadows Collier will present two courses, Is Estate Planning Still Necessary? The Importance of Estate Planning for Nontaxable Estates and Transfer Tax Auditing/Controversies are Not Going Away in the Era of Higher Exemptions. Our monthly Ethics course A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior will be led by Allison McLeod on March 26. Jim Ramsey of Visorie Consulting and Kevin Rockecharlie with BKM Sowan Horan will educate us on Cybersecurity and Search Engine Optimization on March 31.

If you’re looking for a chance to learn and network, you’ll want to check out the Buzzballz Behind-the-Scenes tour and CPE presentation on March 22, and the Brown Bag Lunch Series installment on March 26. Merilee Hicks, CEO of Buzzballz, will provide an overview of this innovative company headquartered in Carrollton at the March 22 event, and she’ll be joined by Erick Cutler and Kevin Harris of EisnerAmper, discussing R&D tax credit and cost segregation. Kenny Broom, a senior manager at Armanino LLP and our 2021-22 Chairman-elect, will speak on Deep Work for Managers at the March 26 Brown Bag event. Both events will include networking time in addition to the outstanding information you will receive.

Speaking of networking, our March Thirsty Thursday get-together on March 18, will include a wine-tasting. Integrity Wines will give what we’re certain will be an exceptional presentation on a variety of wines. You may attend this event for the education and networking alone, or for a more practical experience, you may choose to order a sample set of the featured wines. The first 22 registrants will receive these sample free, so sign up now!

While this season brings with it the hope of an end to the current worldwide health crisis and the promise of a return to routine activity, we know that normalcy cannot return overnight. Because of the threat still posed by the COVID virus, and the restrictions that would still need to be observed for the health and safety of our members, we have made the decision to convert Convergence 2021 from a live event to a virtual platform. The online conference will still take place on Friday, May 28. It will comprise four tracks, a total of 20 sessions, with the same high-quality content you’ve come to expect from the Convergence program. Details are unfolding daily as we work to create the best, most exciting experience for you, and you will be receiving more information about this changeover soon, so watch your email inbox and our website for updates.

There’s so much to be excited and optimistic about as we March into Spring. I hope that you will find the time this month to take a moment, a deep breath, to think of the darkness we’ve come through this year and to look ahead with joyful anticipation to the warm, sunny days ahead.

Is Estate Planning Still Necessary?

The Importance of Estate Planning for Nontaxable Estates

Course Description: In the wake of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA), estate planning has seen a return to its genesis. At its core, estate planning is about making sure assets pass to the right people, at the right time, and in the right manner. For most estates, the transfer tax tail no longer wags the dog due to historically high estate tax exemption amounts which have effectively eliminated the estate tax for all but a few estates. With the transfer tax no longer being the driving force behind estate planning, I often hear the question: is estate planning still necessary? This presentation will focus on why that answer is a resounding YES, both from a non-tax perspective and from an income tax perspective. Key Topics: Testacy vs. Intestacy, Retaining Control over Assets, Planning for Minors, Asset Protection Planning, Probate Avoidance Planning, Business Succession Planning, and Basis Step-Up Planning, Including Use of Portability.

Learning Objectives: Participants will learn about:

·     Testacy vs. Intestacy

·     Retaining Control over Assets

·     Planning for Minors

·     Asset Protection Planning

·     Probate Avoidance Planning

·     Business Succession Planning

·     Basis Step-Up Planning, Including Use of Portability

Online Ethics Course

A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior:

A CPE Ethics Course for Texas CPAs

March – May 2021

You are invited to join us for our monthly, State-approved, four-hour Ethics course, A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior: A CPE Ethics Course for Texas CPAs. This course will be taught by Professor Allison McLeod.

Speaker and author, Allison M. McLeod, LL.M., CPA, will educate and inform CPAs not just on what is the right thing to do according to the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct but how to put your values into action!  As part of this course, we will also look at various schools of ethical thought and walk through real world examples of individuals and companies faced with moral dilemmas.

Description: A CPA is challenged in today’s work world to not only serve his/her client or employer but also to protect the public interest by ensuring that there is transparency in financial reporting or there is fair administration of the tax laws. In balancing the two interests, a CPA may find him or herself in an ethical dilemma. This course covers not only basic ethical frameworks, but also specific rules governing CPA practice and responsibilities. It concludes with a section on how a CPA can put his or her ethics into action.

Learning Objectives:

1.  To educate licensees in ethics of professional accounting as Texas CPAs.

2.  To convey the intent of the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct in the performance of professional accounting services/work, not to adhere to the mere technical compliance of such rules.

3.  To assist the Texas CPA in applying ethical judgment in interpreting the rules and determining public interest. Public interest should be placed ahead of self-interest, even if it means a loss of job or client.

4.  To review and discuss the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and their implications for persons in a variety of practices, including:

·     CPAs in client practice of public accountancy who perform attest and non-attest services.

·     CPAs employed in industry who provide internal accounting and auditing services.

·     CPAs employed in education or in government accounting or auditing.

This is an online event.

Course Description: The year 2020 has been a challenging one for everyone, CPAs included. For one CPA firm, however, it was the most productive, profitable, and efficient year ever. This firm experienced its highest realization of 140% across all clients, despite not charging extra for PPP loans and loan forgiveness. They did more work for more clients in less time—all while using fewer people and providing better client service. There was higher client satisfaction with no last-minute filings or surprises. All this efficiency was possible because this firm adopted a “touch-it-once philosophy.” This philosophy begins with efficiently gathering client data and integrating it into a standard workflow that combines engagement letters and billing into one task once a year. Streamlining tasks has allowed this firm to focus on client service and be more efficient in filing tax returns. They’ve been more productive and profitable, navigating COVID-19 and PPP service obstacles with ease.

Key points:

·     How to efficiently gather and integrate client data

·     How to increase productivity and thereby improve profits

·     How to increase client satisfaction

·     Ways to streamline tasks and improve efficiency

Learning Objectives: Participants will learn how to:

·     Recognize how a “touch-it-once philosophy” pays off in unexpected areas

·     Identify how to properly assess and maintain the collective value of a client base over exceptions based on individual preference

·     List third-party applications and how to maximize their value

·     Live demo walkthrough of a transaction-based workflow

And remember: TXCPA has a database of talking points to assist with media interviews and can also help with members’ presentation needs (PowerPoint documents, brochures and handouts, etc.).
