Chairman’s Message

by Sharon Lukich CPA

Happy New Year! June 1 marks a new (fiscal) year for TXCPA Dallas, and I am thrilled to be the new Chairman of the Board of Directors. I am looking forward to this 12-month adventure as we focus our intent and energy on guiding our association into the future. I would like to congratulate Jason Freeman, 2020-21 Chairman, on his outstanding year and thank him and the 2020-21 Board of Directors for the great job they did in leading us through a year that was, at best, unusual. You lifted the bar high for us, and I am excited to take on the challenge of stewarding the organization to even greater heights!
Convergence 2021 Online is now in the history books. Thanks to the great speakers and sponsors who so generously contributed to the event. Thanks to Media West, the conference platform provider, who worked diligently to help make the event a success. And big thanks to the attendees who were willing, once again, to adapt to the restrictions imposed by COVID and participate in our annual conference online. We appreciate your loyal support; we hope you enjoyed your day with us; and – I think we all can agree – we’re looking forward to seeing you in person for Convergence 2022!
Plans for the Chapter’s activities for the new year are now underway. Our CPE Council will meet soon to begin setting the 2021-22 educational agenda. Committees, in general, are reorganizing and refreshing for the coming year and it is a great time to join one. These groups are such vital components of our organization, and they need your skills and passion. They will be meeting soon to discuss their plans, so I encourage you, if you have not already, to become a committee member and contribute!
If you’re in need of Ethics credit this month, our June Ethics course, taught by Allison McLeod, will be held on June 9. On June 30, you can attend Field Guide to International Tax Regulations. Saville Dodgen’s Robert Smith (Partner) and Jon-Michael Ferris (Tax Senior) will present this session on international and nonresident taxation issues. Both classes will be taught online.
Speaking of CPE, Steve Tillinger returns on August 11 with his virtual midyear tax update seminar. You’ll find an article elsewhere in this edition with details on this popular course.
Also on the calendar for this month are two great networking opportunities. On June 10, our Young Professionals Group is hosting a happy hour at Public School 972 for our younger members, and our monthly Thirsty Thursday social networking hour is on June 17, at Blue Mesa Grill. These monthly events are a great way to get together with old friends and make new ones as well, and they continue to be some of our most popular functions.
This is a great time to get involved in TXCPA Dallas, when the new year is just beginning. Join a committee, attend our social hour, register for a class… Together, let’s lead this organization into a brilliant future!

Board Chairman, 2021-22

A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior:

A CPE Ethics Course for Texas CPAs

Wednesday, June 9, 2021

You are invited to join us for our monthly, State-approved, four-hour Ethics course, A CPA’s Guidebook for Ethical Behavior: A CPE Ethics Course for Texas CPAs.
Speaker and author, Allison M. McLeod, LL.M., CPA, will educate and inform CPAs not just on what is the right thing to do according to the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct but how to put your values into action!  As part of this course, we will also look at various schools of ethical thought and walk through real world examples of individuals and companies faced with moral dilemmas.
Description: A CPA is challenged in today’s work world to not only serve his/her client or employer but also to protect the public interest by ensuring that there is transparency in financial reporting or there is fair administration of the tax laws. In balancing the two interests, a CPA may find him or herself in an ethical dilemma. This course covers not only basic ethical frameworks, but also specific rules governing CPA practice and responsibilities. It concludes with a section on how a CPA can put his or her ethics into action.
Learning Objectives:
  1. To educate licensees in ethics of professional accounting as Texas CPAs.
  2. To convey the intent of the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct in the performance of professional accounting services/work, not to adhere to the mere technical compliance of such rules.
  3. To assist the Texas CPA in applying ethical judgment in interpreting the rules and determining public interest. Public interest should be placed ahead of self-interest, even if it means a loss of job or client.
  4. To review and discuss the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct and their implications for persons in a variety of practices, including:
  • CPAs in client practice of public accountancy who perform attest and non-attest services.
  • CPAs employed in industry who provide internal accounting and auditing services.
  • CPAs employed in education or in government accounting or auditing.
