Chairman’s Message
By Jason Freeman, CPA
What a difference a year makes…
The July newsletter typically starts off with some reference to the searing heat of summer as a metaphor for the “hot” level of activity at TXCPA Dallas. July 2020 has brought the same high temps as always, but the work of the Chapter, while still intense, is somewhat more introspective this year. The pandemic has altered life as we knew it. Distancing, face masks, Zoom meetings…. The world is changing. At TXCPA Dallas, we are changing with it. And we want your input on that process. We want to know how—in this new environment—to best provide the high-quality services that our members are accustomed to as we ride out this unprecedented wave of history.
For some time, even before the COVID crisis, we’ve studied the idea of offering more online CPE—2020 has catapulted us into that reality. As you may have noticed, we are currently holding most of our CPE in an online format and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. We’re excited that so many of you are participating and finding value in these events, and we’d like to have your input regarding the content of future offerings. Let us know what topics would you like to see covered? And are there particular speakers that you’d like to see featured? If you have suggestions, we sincerely invite you to share them with us by emailing Laura McFadden.
Speaking of CPE, we have a great two-hour webinar coming up on July 22nd: Guiding Clients Through Succession Planning and the Sale of Accounting, Medical and Legal Practices During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond. This session will provide an overview of considerations to employ when assisting clients through the practice sale process and other aspects of succession planning. John Eads of Howard LLP, and Elise Barajas and Greg Sampson of Gray Reed will lead us through this important and timely presentation.
Dr. Richard Mark will present our four-hour Accounting Ethics class on July 29th. If you’re in need of Ethics credits right now, not only does this course satisfy the State requirement, but you’ll also find Richard’s approach to the subject both entertaining and enlightening. This is a live class, and you can be confident that every precaution will be taken to ensure your safety.
Our first venture into online networking, Virtual Thirsty Thursday, was a great success! The event last week was attended by about 25 people and went so well that we’re doing it again in August. Stay tuned for the announcement of the date and the opening of registration.
TXCPA Dallas is coping with these life-changing times, as we all are. Learning new skills, creating new procedures and viewing the world in new and dynamic ways. What remains the same is our commitment to you to offer the very best in education, networking, professional support and advocacy—whatever the challenges we may face.
Let’s move forward, together.
Have a safe, healthy and prosperous July!

Scholarship Winner Spotlight
Each month, we will spotlight one of this year’s TXCPA Dallas Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know Southern Methodist University graduate accounting student Cecilia Weigman and welcoming her to TXCPA Dallas.
Cecilia Weigman wants to change the world…by helping those who change the world. She wasn’t sure she wanted to pursue an accounting career at all until she found a mentor in a former CFO of a social entrepreneurship business, a restaurant that rehabilitates teens coming out of juvenile detention. Since Cecilia’s passion is human rights and affecting social change, she was inspired through this association to set her sights on a CPA certification with an eye to one day using her accounting skills to help social entrepreneurs run their nonprofits like successful for-profit businesses in order to raise capital for the programs and services they provide.
Cecilia received the Merit Scholarship and Sewell Merit Scholarship from SMU’s Cox Business School and the Second Century Scholar Scholarship from SMU. She received a Caswell Leadership Grant for co-founding a social entrepreneurship education initiative. She was a member of the University Honors Program, the BBA Scholars Program, and won the Phillip H. Solomon Award in World Languages and Literatures: Chinese, as well as the Outstanding Accounting Major and Distinguished Entrepreneurship Student Awards. Cecilia has served as Financial Officer and Site Leader for Alternative Breaks, a student organization offering community service opportunities during academic breaks. She was the 2018 Mustang Awakening Retreat Coordinator, Spirituality Co-Chair and a bible study leader for SMU Catholic Campus Ministry. She received her BBA in Accounting in May 2019, and her MS in Accounting last month.
Cecilia served as a tax intern at BaCo Group and as a Mergers & Acquisitions tax intern at PwC where she will join the staff in January 2021.
TXCPA Dallas welcomes and congratulates Cecilia Weigman.
