Chairman’s Message
By Bill Sims, CPA
Welcome back from your holidays and Happy 2020! We hope your new decade is off to as great a start as ours is at TXCPA Dallas.
We kick off 2020 on Wednesday, January 8, as we hold the final event in our 2019-20 Member Appreciation CPE Series. This program will include a discussion on financial accounting for tax professionals led by Jim Smith, a session on cybersecurity by Chris Barnes, and Christine Edson, an FBI special agent, will give us the inside story on the infamous Collin Street Bakery embezzlement case. On January 9, Jennifer Johnson returns with her popular Advanced Excel class. The Young Professionals Group will hold another breakfast event in its Leadership CPE Series on January 15, where attendees will learn how to “identify their superpowers and their kryptonite” in a presentation by former TXCPA Dallas Chair Tim Pike and Lydia Resnik, Vice President at Talent Suite. Our monthly Ethics course on January 22, will round out this schedule of outstanding CPE opportunities for the month.
On Wednesday, January 29, we will gather for our Annual Meeting of Members at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:00. This year we are very excited to welcome Elizabeth Reich, City of Dallas CFO, to present what is sure to be an entertaining dinner speech. Also during this event, we will be voting on the 2020-21 slate of officer nominees. The cost is $30 per person for the evening, and, if you have not already done so, you may register by clicking here.
This month sees the graduation of our 11th Leadership Development Academy class. We congratulate this group of outstanding young CPAs and look forward to their future contributions to the continued success of TXCPA Dallas.

TXCPA Dallas
Scholarship Winner Spotlight
Each month, we will spotlight one of this year’s TXCPA Dallas Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) graduate accounting student, Belinda Nunez, and welcoming her to TXCPA Dallas.
Belinda Nunez is a non-traditional student. For over 10 years she worked in retail merchandising, excelling in her various positions and climbing the professional ladder quickly. But after a decade, she decided that this path was not going to take her where she wanted to go, which was a field where she could not only thrive, but also do what she wanted most of all: help others. Because of her love for numbers and knack for money management, she decided on a career in accounting.
Belinda has been on the Dean’s List at UTD, as well as a student in the school’s Professional Program in Accounting (PPA). She is a member of Beta Alpha Psi and was founder of UTD’s chapter of the Association of Women in Communications. In addition to TXCPA Dallas Scholarship, she has been awarded the Jindal School of Management, PPA Undergrad, Comet Transfer and Phi Theta Kappa scholarships. She received her B.S. in Accounting, summa cum laude, last May and plans to graduate with her Masters in May of 2020. Belinda has served as an accounting/finance intern for Pioneer Natural Resources and is currently a junior accountant with Ighty Support LLC.
TXCPA Dallas welcomes and congratulates Belinda Nunez.
