Chairman’s Message

By Tim Pike, CPA

February is off to a great start here at the Dallas CPA Society!

Have you registered for Convergence 2019 yet? Our registration has been open almost two months now, and enrollment has been brisk. If you’ve attended in the past, you know the outstanding value of this event! This year we’re back at the Omni Frisco Hotel at The Star, the Dallas Cowboys’ state-of-the-art headquarters in Frisco. There will be 25 outstanding sessions for you to choose from, plus a luncheon keynote speech by world-famous business and real estate mogul, H. Ross Perot, Jr.! On March 18th the Early Bird price ends, so take advantage now of the very best educational value available to the North Texas accounting and financial services industry. Be the Early Bird…Register Now!

The Annual Meeting of Members was held January 16th at Royal Oaks Country Club and provided a great kick-off to the calendar year. Our keynote speaker, Dave Lieber, nationally-known humorist and Dallas Morning News “Watchdog” columnist, entertained us with stories from his celebrated career. The highlight of the night, however, may have been when Dallas CPA Society Executive Director Meg Campbell was roasted in honor of her 20 years with the Association. (Be sure and ask her about it when you see her next!) A new slate of DCPAS leadership was elected for the 2019-20 year, and we congratulate these remarkable individuals on their accomplishment.

We have a lot going on this month!

On February 13th, join us for another of our Brown Bag Lunch Series events in the DCPAS training room. This is a great networking opportunity for those of you who have challenges attending evening functions. This month’s topic is Quick and Easy Recipes, so sign up for the event now, and on the 13th, bring your lunch, a favorite quick and easy recipe and join us for a fun lunch hour. Also this month, on February 21st, we resume our Thirsty Thursday networking hours with a meet-up at On the Border in Addison. Join us from 6:00pm-8:00pm for one of our most popular member benefits.

On February 26th, the Dallas CPA Society, Dallas Bar Association and the Financial Planning Association will present a Blockchain Collaborative and Reception at The Clubs of Preston. This event, offering two CPE credit hours, will feature a presentation from 3pm–5pm by Blockchain experts Doug Sleeter, Lacey Shrum, Ross Morgan and Ed Kless, on the effect this powerful technology is having, and will continue to have, on our profession. A social hour will follow, offering a chance to network with peers from our co-sponsoring organizations. Register now, and I look forward to seeing you on February 26th.

Have a great month and remember to sign up for Convergence 2019 by March 18th!

DCPAS Young Philanthropy Award

Finalists Announced

At the Dallas CPA Society’s Annual Meeting of Members, Emily George of BKD LLP was presented with the inaugural Dallas CPA Society Young Philanthropy Award. The award, co-sponsored by The Dallas Foundation and the Dallas CPA Society, recognizes a volunteer’s service while also giving a cash prize to the nonprofit of their choice. In Emily’s case the award will be made to Africa Family Rescue.

Nominations for this first Young Philanthropist Award were accepted by The Dallas Foundation for individuals under the age of 40 who have significantly impacted a nonprofit organization in Dallas. The award celebrates the change-makers who dedicate their time and talents to making our community a better place for everyone.

Emily’s deep dedication and desire to help nonprofits make a big impact led her to Africa Family Rescue, a faith-based nonprofit organization designed to restore hope and dignity to families, communities and churches affected by extreme poverty in Africa. Since 2014, Emily has assisted with financial reporting, payroll management, compiling 990 information and more. By volunteering her financial knowledge and providing pro bono accounting support to the organization, she has enabled Africa Family Rescue to better focus on their mission.

This year’s finalists were announced during the Dallas CPA Society Holiday Party in December. They included Alison Daubert of Montgomery Coscia Greilich LLP, who serves as an active mentor in the Young Women’s Preparatory Network, a nonprofit agency that partners with public school districts across the state of Texas to operate the largest network of all-girls, public, college preparatory schools in the nation; and Tania Sederdahl of Bland Garvey, who volunteers at Joni and Friends, a ministry dedicated to extending the love and message of Jesus Christ to people who are affected by disability around the world.

Scholarship Winner Spotlight
Each month, we spotlight one of this year’s Dallas CPA Society Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know University of North Texas (UNT) graduate accounting student, Han Phu, and welcoming her to the Dallas CPA Society.

Entrepreneurship and ambition are driving motivators to Patrick Sarman. Coming from a line of men who owned their own businesses, Patrick hopes one day to follow their lead and establish his own firm. He views all of the skills he’s learning now as building blocks to that goal, which he sees as not only a means to an independent livelihood, but also as a venue to develop others and to serve his community.

Patrick has received the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Scholarship from PCAOB, as well as the PPA Deans Fund Scholarship from UTD and has been on the Dean’s List. He has been a Student Government Senator and Peer Advisor. He served on the Dean’s Council, as an Accounting Mentor, and a s a member of the Campus Sustainability Committee, and Beta Alpha Psi. Patrick was also the Treasurer for Pi Kappa Phi. He received a Bachelor degree summa cum laude, and has accepted a full-time job offer from EY to begin in July.

Patrick’s ultimate goal is to become a pillar of his community and go on to help advise and grow other businesses in the area.

The Dallas CPA Society welcomes and congratulates Patrick Sarman!
