Chairman’s Message
By Tim Pike, CPA
We are down to the wire on our 15th annual education super-conference, Convergence 2019, and it is impossible not to think about how far this event has come. What began in 2004 as a three-track CPE Day, held in three modest meeting rooms at Cityplace and with an attendance of around 300, has grown into a nationally-recognized symposium featuring some of the country’s foremost business and legal experts offering their wealth of knowledge on the most relevant topics to North Texas accounting, financial services and litigation practitioners. This year we anticipate an attendance of approximately 1,200 at The Star! We will be treated to the same outstanding presentation of information that we’ve come to expect from Convergence, including a keynote address delivered by Ross Perot, Jr. If you have not already registered for this exciting event, there is still time, and you may register here for Convergence 2019. You won’t want to miss it!
Other DCPAS CPE events coming up this month include a Controller/CFO CPE Series course, “Financial Statement Analysis – Key to Solid Decision-Making”, on April 11th, and our four-hour Ethics course, taught by Dr. Richard Mark, on April 18th.
Don’t forget to RSVP for the April Thirsty Thursday on April 18th at the Blue Mesa Grill in Addison. At this month’s event, we’ll be recognizing our Convergence 2019 Sponsors, so register now and join us in thanking the people who help pay the tab for the Dallas CPA Society’s signature event.
If you are – or if you know of – an emerging leader or promising college junior, senior or graduate accounting student, we have two deadlines coming up soon that you’ll want to note. May 6th is the deadline for applications to the 2019-20 Leadership Development Academy (LDA), and May 20th is the cutoff date for Dallas CPA Society Scholarship entries. Both of these programs have become prestigious DCPAS institutions, and we are extremely proud of the part they play in developing the next generation of accounting professionals and leaders. For applications to either of these programs, please contact Laura McFadden atlmcfadden@cpadallas.org.
Remember to register for Convergence 2019, and I hope you have a productive month!

Each month, we will spotlight one of this year’s Dallas CPA Society Scholarship winners. Join us this month in getting to know Southern Methodist University (SMU) graduate accounting student Lisa Suennen and welcoming her to the Dallas CPA Society.
One look at Lisa Suennen’s curriculum vitae reveals a busy young woman with a clear vision and the focus required to bring it to life. Lisa is paying her own way through school, working both full- and part-time jobs, while maintaining a high GPA and staying involved in a myriad of service organizations. Among those benefitting from her dedication to the community are Paul Quinn College where she volunteers with We Over Me Farm, and at SMU, where she has served as a Site Leader with the school’s Alternative Breaks program, and as an English-as-a-Second-Language “conversation buddy”.
Lisa has received SMU’s Founders and Housing Scholarships for the past four years, as well as the Chi Omega Scholarship in 2016. She is a Young Fellow at the university, working with TEDxSMU; tutors in 3000-level accounting courses for residents of Loyd Commons dormitory; and sings with the SMU Belle Tones. She will graduate with her Masters degree next month.
Lisa interned with PwC in San Diego, California, in the summer of 2017, and has received an offer of full-time employment there upon her graduation. One of her main interests is female empowerment, and part of her vision for the future is to help develop and promote potential female leaders through a program at the firm dedicated to the retention and advancement of women. She also plans to devote her time and talent to establishing a curriculum that teaches financial literacy to underprivileged young adults, creating a precedent where classes are taught to seniors in high school or at no cost through other institutions.
The Dallas CPA Society welcomes and congratulates Lisa Suennen.
